English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programmes at South Cheshire College are designed for adult (16+) speakers whose first language is not English, who are living or trying to settle in the UK.

The courses aim to develop listening, speaking, reading, writing and understanding of the English language, whatever the starting level of knowledge.


Why study an ESOL course?

ESOL courses are designed to help you improve your level of English to get more out of your life in the U.K. and to make it easier to:

  • Talk to doctors, teachers, bank or shop assistants
  • Fill in administrative forms
  • Understand laws and customs
  • Help your children with homework
  • Study or train for a qualification
  • Look for employment or apply for citizenship

Who are the ESOL classes for?

ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) courses are for people who have a first language other than English and who live or work in the UK (subject to resident status).


How will you be assessed?

ESOL courses are offered at different levels to meet the specific needs of learners, starting at Pre-Entry level for those who cannot read, write or speak any English, right through to Level 2 which is equivalent to GCSE level English.

You will firstly have an interview with a tutor and take an Initial Assessment test to determine your overall level of English.  You will then be put onto the most suitable class for your level.


What can you do after this course?

You can progress on to the next level.  All courses last 10 weeks and students have the opportunity to enrol 3 times in one year (autumn, spring and summer terms).

Studying ESOL at South Cheshire College will help you to get the skills you need to progress on to a suitable college courses or to help you in the search for employment. It will also improve your communication skills, build your confidence and help you integrate into life in the UK.


When can I enrol?

Enrolment will take place on Thursday 5th January 2017 between 2pm and 7pm.
