South Cheshire College celebrated the grand opening of its on-site Barbers Salon with award-winning, International Barbering Educator, Darryn Pitman, marking the official launch.

The new salon named Squires of Cheshire is now open for business and run by Debra Baldwin, Hair Lecturer at South Cheshire College, who has been barbering for over 23 years and previously ran two salons.

Debbie commented: “The idea arose for Squires of Cheshire as we could see there was a gap in the market and an opportunity to take advantage of how popular the barbering concept is now in the hairdressing industry.”

Squires will operate as a commercial salon for clientele outside the College, however students have the opportunity to complete their real work experience sessions at the facility, providing a real working environment experience, as well as developing their employability skills.

Students, guests, tutors and South Cheshire College / West Cheshire College’s Principal & Chief Executive, Jasbir Dhesi, all attended the launch, with Darryn cutting the ribbon to mark the official opening of Squires.

Darryn is a highly acclaimed Barber and Salon Manager at Captiva Spa with several awards under his belt including, HJ’s International Barber of the Year and WAHL British Barber Of The Year. He is also a member of the ISA Artistic Team, an Ambassador for British Master Barber and an International Educator.

Darryn said: “I was delighted to be part of the official opening of Squires of Cheshire. It is a concept growing in popularity and a real opportunity for South Cheshire College students.

“As an International Educator, I am always keen to encourage students and apprentices by demonstrating new techniques, skills or advising them on their career development plans. I appreciated having mentors around me throughout my career and hence enjoy helping others reach their potential.

“It was really encouraging to see so much enthusiasm from the students on the opening, and I am proud to champion and support the young talent of the future.

“I have no doubt that Squires will do great things and thank South Cheshire College for allowing me to support their new salon.”

The celebrations began with bucks fizz and canapés served by the AA College Restaurant of the Year, The Academy.

A full demonstration was then performed by Darryn, showcasing his on point barbering skills and demonstrating new techniques. Students also benefitted from a short Q&A forum, enabling students to gain tips and advice from Darryn’s experience over the past 10 years in the business.

Debbie also said: “We are now proud to see the salon officially operating, and would like to say a huge thank you to Darryn and the team from Dear Barber for being part of the official opening of Squires of Cheshire.

“Thanks to Darryn our students had a full skin fade demonstration and Q&A session along the way. Darryn was inspirational and gave us inside knowledge on where the industry can take us and how it’s changed his career throughout his experiences as a hairdresser.”
